Verbs are catalogued by their root, ending in a hyphen. The root alone is not used as an actual word, only inflected forms.

Verb Types

There are two main categories of verbs:

The only difference in practice is how some suffixes are attached to the stem.

Inflections

Verbs can be inflected for:

Morpheme Order

The order of morphemes is root + mood + tense + negation + agreement

Negation

See Negation for a full explanation.

Negation is indicated by a particle /-tk-/. If this would produce an invalid consonant cluster, it changes to /-itk-/.

Examples:
zamm- (to come) zammatki (does not come)
klef- (to go) kleftki (does not go), klefpitki (did not go)

Agreement

Verbs agree with the subject on gender and number.

Inflection Table

The indicative and optative moods share personal agreement markers, while quotative has its own set.

Optative is distinguished from indicative by its own set of mood/tense affixes; see moods.

Gender Number Indicative/Optative Quotative
Animate Singular -oy -uy
Concrete Singular -i -we/-e
Abstract Singular -ix -wex/-ex
Animate Plural -ur -ar
Concrete Plural -il -wel/-el
Abstract Plural -e/-te -o/-to

The quotative forms with -w and the abstract plural with -t are only used after vowels.

Mood

There are three moods: indicative, volitive (also called optative) and quotative.

Indicative and quotative have no mood suffix, but use different subject agreement suffixes (see subject agreement inflection).

Volitive uses the same set of subject suffixes as indicative, and the mood marker -u/-un (for consonantal verbs) or -w/-wn for O-stem verbs. The variant with /-n/ is used before vowels, including the future tense markers.

Voice and Tense

There is an active and a passive voice. Each of them has their own set of tense suffixes (shared by all moods).

The tenses are only present, past and future. Aspect is not overtly marked; "is walking" and "walks" would be rendered equally as selmoy.

Active Passive
Past -(V)p -(V)fr
Present -li/-il
Future -(e)c -(a)kk

Nominalized Form

Verbs in Akath do not have an infinitive. Typical constructions rendered with an infinitive in English usually use the nominalized form, created with the suffix -ezel/-wezel and of abstract gender.

Inflection of the nominalized

The nominalized form is considered an abstract noun, but with syncopated forms -(w)ezl when inflected. For example, consider lyokl- (to eat):

Singular Plural
Nominative lyoklezel lyoklezlor
Accusative lyoklezlet lyoklezley

Subject of a Clause

Objects

The nominalized form behaves as a pure noun, and as such cannot take an accusative object. Instead, its complement takes the preposition sak.

Examples:

\gla xanf.ezel sak tath ukk.ix pek.e
\glb drink.NOMIN of water.NOM be.ABSTR good.ACC
\ft drinking water is good
